Tune-up or complete overhaul: which one should you choose?

In spring, it’s the question we hear most at the repair shop: a regular tune-up or a complete overhaul? The answer depends on your bike’s condition and how long it’s been since it was last taken apart.

Tune-up or complete overhaul: which one should you choose?

The tune-up

This is regular maintenance, the one we recommend every season:

  • brake and gear adjustment;
  • minor truing of both wheels;
  • checking and tightening all bolts;
  • chain lubrication and wear check;
  • tire inflation and test ride.

At the shop, it costs $96 before tax, parts extra, usually ready in 3 to 5 business days.

The complete overhaul

Here, the bike is completely taken apart:

  • full drivetrain degreasing;
  • greasing of the headset, bottom bracket and hub bearings;
  • truing of both wheels;
  • reassembly, full adjustment and test ride.

It costs $309 before tax, parts extra, and takes 7 to 10 business days.

How to choose?

Choose the tune-up if your bike rides well and you maintain it every season. Consider the complete overhaul if the bike hasn’t been taken apart in several seasons, if it has been ridden a lot in the rain or on salted roads, or if you hear creaking from the bottom bracket or headset. If in doubt, bring it in: we’ll give you an estimate before we start.
