Bike touring in Québec: preparing for long rides

If you’ve been cycling for several years, you may want to push your limits this summer and try longer rides. But before setting off on a big two-wheeled adventure, you’ll need to take a few important precautions. Here are some tips from our experts to help you prepare for a long ride in Québec.

how to prepare for a long summer bike ride in Québec

Plan your route carefully

One of the most important steps in your preparation is to study the route you want to ride. Since you’ll be riding a distance you’re not used to, factors such as losing motivation or running out of energy could get in your way. Also keep in mind that if you’re planning a round trip, you’ll have to cover the same distance twice to get back home.

Want to discover a new place or a new bike path this summer? We recommend not aiming too high on your next ride. You could, for example, start with a ride of a few kilometres, then gradually increase the distance over the summer.

Bring the right food

Cycling is one of the most demanding sports, as it uses almost every muscle in your body. You may therefore burn a lot of energy on your next ride in Québec. To avoid exhaustion and possible injury, it’s very important to bring food for the trip.

If you’re only riding for a few hours, you can eat a light meal before you leave. Over long distances, foods rich in vitamins and minerals will be essential to keep you going (dried fruit, nuts, granola bars, etc.). Don’t forget to bring enough water, and listen to your body if you tire too quickly!

Put comfort first

Every seasoned cyclist will tell you: on a long ride, comfort is key. Don’t overlook it, since you’ll stay in the same position for several hours in a row in the sun. It’s important to wear suitable clothing that keeps you cool and helps avoid heatstroke.

To keep your saddle from hurting, wear padded cycling shorts that reduce pressure on your lower body and saddle chafing on your legs. You can also wear gloves to reduce vibration on your wrists and keep better control of your bike. Your shoes should also have a stiff sole, which lets you transfer maximum power to the pedals with each stroke.

As for your helmet, always wear it for safety. Some cyclists use lighter models that ventilate the head better and wick away sweat. Either way, feel free to ask our team, who can advise you on the best products available.

Have your bike checked before you go
