Bike repair: how to fix your bike on the road

A breakdown can happen at any time, even with every precaution. Here’s what to bring to fix your bike when there’s no shop nearby.

Bring the right tools

Especially on a long ride or a multi-day trip, keep the tools to fix your bike within reach. If a part comes out of adjustment, you can fix it on the spot. Carry an emergency kit with a pump, patches, an inner tube, hex keys, a Phillips screwdriver, an adjustable wrench and a chain tool.

These tools won’t let you fix broken parts, but they’ll help you keep riding if you’re far from town. It’s a very practical solution that will save you a lot of trouble in an emergency. If you’re travelling with bike bags, also bring a few spare parts such as a spare tire or a brake cable, depending on your bike.

Do some maintenance before you ride

Many bike specialists will tell you that maintaining your bike is a good way to prevent problems before a trip. It keeps you from getting stuck without help somewhere far from everything. Especially when travelling, but at all times too, check that your tire pressure stays right by using a gauge on the valves. For the correct pressure, follow the indications printed on the tires.

Next, lubricate your bike chain so it moves freely. It’s generally recommended to do this every 150 kilometres. Finally, remember to check your saddle, handlebars, brakes and gears and adjust them if needed. Your comfort should also be a priority when riding long distances.
