Bike safety: what to do before you ride

Bike safety always matters, even before cyclists are back on the roads! The snow is slowly melting in Québec, which means bike paths will be open again before long. To ride safely, you’ll need to follow certain rules throughout the summer. Here are some reminders we strongly recommend reading before your first ride.

Check your bike’s condition

Bike safety doesn’t only apply on the road: it starts with maintaining your bike. To make sure it works after being stored all winter, adjust it properly before taking it outside. First, sit on the saddle and put your foot on the pedal. If your leg is fully extended when the crank is at its lowest point, you’re sitting at the right height.

Your handlebars should also be adjusted so you can reach them by leaning forward slightly without feeling tension in your back. It’s generally recommended to set them 2.5 cm (1 in) below the saddle, but you can also adjust the height to suit your size. Also check the condition of your brakes, wheels, crankset and chain, and replace them if they show signs of wear or rust.

Wear your helmet at all times

Head injuries are among the most serious for cyclists. Yet many people ride without a helmet, even though it can save your life. It’s essential to wear a helmet that fits your head. To make sure it fits, lengthen or shorten the straps so they meet under your ears and don’t squeeze your chin. It shouldn’t wobble on your head or slide onto your neck or forehead. If it shows signs of wear or is damaged, replace it.

How can you be sure your helmet will protect you in an accident? When you buy or adjust your helmet, check for a certification mark (CSA, CPSC, ASTM, EN or SNELL). If one or more of these marks is visible, your helmet meets recognized strength standards. Your head will be protected in the event of an accident.

Use accessories

Because of the size of their bike, cyclists are often less visible than other road users. That’s why you should get accessories that make you visible on the road, whatever the conditions. Most bikes today come with reflectors that reflect car headlights and alert drivers to your presence. But they’re not always enough to keep you safe. We recommend installing a bell or horn on your handlebars to warn pedestrians and other cyclists who may not see you.

To be even safer, you should also use a mirror, which makes it easier to see around you while riding. That way, if you need to ride in the street, you won’t be surprised when a car passes you. Reflective vests and bike lights are also essential when riding at night, so other road users can easily see you.

Follow the rules of the road

Cyclists, like drivers, must follow certain Highway Safety Code rules when riding. These rules not only protect them from unpredictable behaviour but also help everyone share the road smoothly. For example, when riding in the street, always stay on the right side, in the same direction as traffic. This makes it easier for drivers to see you and pass you safely. If you need to turn, signal your intention to other road users with your arms.

Also keep in mind that your bike makes you more vulnerable than a car, which is why you need to stay alert in urban and residential areas. A driver might, for example, open their door without warning when parking or turn without checking their blind spot. Always make sure they’ve seen you before you move. Many places in Québec City also let you use bike paths right in the heart of the city: make the most of them! To find the routes available, see the dedicated section of the Ville de Québec website.
