Winter cycling essentials

Contrary to what some might think, you can ride a bike in winter! Of course, you’ll need to be extra careful all season and keep an eye on the weather. Since roads are harder to ride in the cold season, you’ll need to prepare well before heading out. Here are some essential items to gear up with when you ride this winter.

Two bikes on a winter trail

The right clothing

Wearing warm clothes for winter cycling is obvious to most people. But your clothes shouldn’t get in the way of your movements. A long coat, for example, could keep you from pedalling properly or even get caught in your crankset. Ideally, layering is the answer in cold weather. People often tend to overdress, since cycling warms you up quickly.

Insulated, water-resistant cycling tights and waterproof pants work very well in cold weather. They protect you from snow sprayed by passing cars. Rather than your winter boots, we recommend padded, comfortable shoes that sit better on your pedals. Also consider wearing several layers with sealed seams, including a breathable one, to stay warm on the road. Depending on your bike’s shifters and brake levers, wear gloves or mittens that let you use them properly while keeping your fingers warm. A balaclava under your helmet will protect your ears.

Grippy tires

You already know that all cars in Québec must have winter tires from December 1 every year. This requirement doesn’t apply to cyclists, but you should still follow it. Tires suited to winter conditions help you avoid falls and accidents and keep you from tiring yourself out.

Studded tires and oversized tires, for example, are very popular in winter for their excellent grip. That’s why you sometimes see cyclists riding fatbikes on snow or ice. Want to try? Our fatbike guided tour rides from December to March. Thinner tires, on the other hand, cut through slush on the pavement better. Whatever you choose, you can also lower your tire pressure slightly to increase grip on icy surfaces.

Powerful lights

In winter, the weather can change very quickly, which is why you need to be seen at all times. This matters even more since there’s much less daylight in the cold season. We recommend powerful lights, especially if you ride to work.

Also wear light-coloured or even reflective clothing so drivers can see you clearly. They probably won’t expect to share the road with you this winter, so be careful!

Maintenance supplies

Winter conditions are especially harsh in Québec, particularly on a vehicle you use regularly. The cold and the salt spread on the roads are hard on your bike and can even make it rust over time. To keep all its parts in good condition, you’ll need to maintain it more often than in summer. Ideally, keep the bike at outdoor temperature (garage, shed or balcony) to avoid freeze-thaw effects on its moving parts, especially cables and housings, derailleurs and brakes.

A kit with maintenance products will be essential during the winter. Brakes, derailleurs, spokes and cables, for example, need regular lubrication to work properly.
